IONIAN UNIVERSITY

The Ionian University was founded by Presidential Degree in 1984. Its Department of History began functioning in Corfu in 1985.

The Ionian University has an undisputed special character due to various factors including the nature of its departments, the orientation which we are striving to give it and the rich history of the place in which it has been established.

The Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting and that of Archives and Library Science were instituted to cover a deficiency in Greek university programmes. These two departments are now as unique as made it vital to inaugurate a university-level programme in this field. It was like-wise necessary to provide for the education and training of specialised archivists and librarians, inasmuch as Greece has a wealth of historical documents, and records some of the most significant of which can be found in the historic Archieves of Corfu.

The island's celebrated musical tradition contributed to the decision to establish a Department of Music Studies there; its aim is to influence the musical life of the entire country and help develop a music centre which will be among the most worthwhile in Greece.
