The Department of History began operating at the Ionian University in the 1985-1986 academic year, offering an eight-semester course of studies.

The curiculum of the Department has been designed to offer the student the broadest possible knowledge of history, through a combination of survey courses and courses dealing with specialised chronological and thematic fields. It is structured in such a way as to bring the student in contact with a broad range of subject matter and methods.

The Departmentís research programme has already begun with a number of collective and individual studies funded by the budget of Universityís Research Committee, which covers only reseracherís operating expenses.

The department boasts an exceptional library, consisting of 15,000 volumes of both Greek and foreign works (English, French, German and Italian).

The collection also contains 190 different journals, of which 55 are Greek and 135 foreign, and an excellent collection of maps, mainly historical, political and geophysical, depicting the Greek and world scene.
