Ionian University - Department of History

STUDIES AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

The course of studies is for eight semesters. At the beginning of each semester, students are asked to declare which of the optional courses on the indicative programme of studies they will take. Each semester includes at least thirteen weeks of classes. The academic year begins on 1st September of each year and ends on 31 August of the following one. There are three examination periods: in January/ February, June and September.

The programme of studies is revised every April by the Department's General Assembly.

LANGUAGE

All courses are taught in Greek, and thus it is expected that students entering the university will have adequate knowledge of the Greek language. It is however possible for students to submit tutorial assignments or to take written or oral examinations in another European language.

Moreover, host students have the opportunity to attend free of charge courses of Modern Greek language in the Ionian University, throughout the academic year.

Beyond that, the Ionian University organises summer intensive courses of Modern Greek. For more information, all interested students should address themselves to the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting. Tel.: 0661-45614/5, Fax: 0661-22549.

POST-GRADUATE STUDIES

In the Department of History, there are 60 doctoral candidates from various Greek and foreign universities working on their theses. They have a broad spectrum of undergraduate degrees (law, economics, history, archaeology, engineering and architecture).

ASSESSMENT METHODS - CREDITS

The basic teaching method is lectures, however, there are also courses conducted through research. All courses are equal in duration and credits (3 hours = 3 credits).

There are no prerequisite courses, however, students in more advanced years must have the relative knowledge required for attending their courses.
At the end of each semester, there is an exam for each course.

For the ECTS/ERASMUS students apply the same rules as for the regularly registered students. Therefore, upon their arrival at Corfu, the ECTS/ERASMUS students must choose, with the assistance of the ECTS/ERASMUS Departmental Co-ordinator, their final courses to attend.
