Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting

    The Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, which opened in the 1986-87 academic year, offers a four-year course of study. This comprises eight semesters, the seventh of which is spent at universities in European countries, where the languages taught by the Department are spoken (English, French, German). The objective of the Department is to train university students as translators and interpreters.

All students follow the same curriculum during the first four semesters, after which they continue in either the Translation or the Interpreting Section:

a. Translation: The courses offered are: Translation Theory and Technique, Translation (Literary, Technical and Economic) from one of the three languages into Greek and vice-versa, Language and Culture (Greek, English, French and German), Histories of Literatures, Modern Literatures, General Linguistics, Comparative Stylistics, Semiotics, Lexicography, Social Science etc.

b. Interpreting: In addition to those subjects taught to all students in the first four semesters the Interpreting curriculum includes: Theory of Interpreting, Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting, Workshops, Note-Taking Techniques, Phonetics etc.

    The Department has a library of 18,000 volumes of Greek and foreign works (mainly English, French and German). Of these 2,500 are encyclopedias and dictionaries. The collection also contains 230 journals, of which 54 are Greek and 176 foreign, and 18 foreign newspapers. The Department also has language laboratories for up to 20 students. The laboratories are fully equipped with audio-visual teaching aids computer room system for simultaneous interpreting, typing room, video room, photocopying room.
