The existing data network
The existing data network of the Ionian University connects four buildings, which house the four University Departments. The network center itself is located in the building of the Archives and Library Sciences Dept. whereas the connection between the center and the other buildings is realized through leased lines and baseband modems. A router, Cisco 4000, in the main building and smaller routers, Cisco 1000, in the other buildings are used for the connection. Connection to Internet is realized through FORTHnet, at a speed of 64 Kbps.
In each building there is a local Ethernet network. The local Ethernet network in the History Department branches off by the use of two 10BaseT hubs. In the Translation and Interpreting Department, as well as in the Archives and Library Sciences Department, it branches off by the use of 10Base2 repeaters.
Future upgrading
The Ionian University is being funded by the EU (EPEAEK programme - vertical network action) for the upgrading of the University data and voice network. This project is currently at the stage of designing and planning of the new upgraded network.
In the framework of the horizontal network action of EPEAEK, the connection of the University to the Greek Research & Technology Network, at a speed of 64 Kbps, is being realized.
