Useful Information for Erasmus Students
Ionian University
The overall duration of studies is eight semesters. Each academic year comprises two semesters, of 13 weeks each, and commences in September 1st of each year and ends on 31st of August of the following year. An examination period of twenty days corresponds to each semester.
There is a third examination period (repetitive for all courses) in September.

Useful Information For the Erasmus Students
Arrival at Corfu
Corfu is daily connected by sea with the ports of Igoumenitsa and Patra as well as with the ports of Brindisi, Ancona and Venice in Italy (not on a daily basis), while by air, the island is connected with the Athens airport (on a daily basis) and the airport of Thessaloniki (only twice a week).
Arrival by coach
There are scheduled journies by coach, from Athens (duration of journey : 8 hours) and Thessaloniki (duration: 11 hours) to Igoumenitsa (Athens coaches KTEL , tel : 01 – 5129443, Thessaloniki coaches, tel.: 031 – 5101110).
Arrival by ferryboat or ship
There are scheduled journies by ferryboats from Igoumenitsa (almost every hour, duration : 2 hours approx.). Harbour Office in Corfu, tel.: 0661 – 32655 / 40002, Harbour Office in Igoumenitsa, tel.: 0665 – 22235)
and scheduled journies on a daily basis by ship from Patra (not as frequent as the ferryboats, duration : 8 hours - Harbour Office in Patra, tel.: 061 – 341002, 341024).
During the summer, journies from Venice are scheduled on a daily basis, while throughout the year scheduled are journies from the other Italian ports, too, such as Brindisi and Ancona.
Arrival by plane
- Olympic Airways flies every day to and from Athens (duration of flight : 50 min.) and twice a week from Thessaloniki.
The airport is just three (3) kilometers outside the town of Corfu.

- Aegean Airlines also flies twice per day to and from Athens (Tel.: 0661 27008).
During the summer period (March – October), Corfu is also connected by air with other European cities.
Both in the port and the airport there are taxi terminals from where travellers can be served (cost per drive to the town centre : GRD 1500 approx. = 5 EUROs approx.).
Arrival at the Ionian University
Before their arrival students must mail both their preliminary registration form to the International Relations Office and the accommodation form to the Accommodation Office of the University.
Students must also carry with them the following :
Students are strongly advised to arrive at Corfu on working days and hours (Monday – Friday , 09:00 – 14:00) !
Upon arrival they should address themselves to the International Relations Office (Ms Denise Karvouni ) and afterwards to the Secretariat of the Department they wish to study in for their formal registration.
Accommodation
ERASMUS students should contact the Accommodation Office before their arrival in order to get information on the conditions of their accommodation and boarding.
The Ionian University has no Halls of Residence at the time.

(*) Contractual period : Three (3) days before the start of the 1st semester until the end of the examination period of the spring semester.
Attention ! Christmas and Easter Holidays periods are not covered by the contract.

If the students have booked no accommodation before their arrival, they can stay in a Hotel in the Corfu town, for a few days, before they settle in (see the enclosed list).
Residence Permit
Students expected to stay longer than three months, should address themselves to the Foreign’s Office (Alykes Potamou, 49100 Corfu, tel.+30 661 39277, Bus no 7 from Sanrocco square ) for the issuing of the Residence Permit.
For the issuing of the R.P. required are the following :
Insurance
The Erasmus students must have the E 111 or E 128 form.
Upon their arrival at Corfu, they must go to the Social Security Institution (IKA – I.Theotoki str. formerly Avramiou str.) having with them the E 111 – E 128 form and their passport, in order to get their temporary health booklet for their residence period in Corfu, Greece.
In case they do not have the E 128 form, they must insure themselves in their Home country, before they arrive at Corfu.
Cost of living
Drachma (GRD) is the Greek currency (1 EURO = 340.75 GRD )
Coins : GRD 5,10,20,50,100,500 / Banknotes : GRD 100, 200, 500,1000, 5.000,10.000.
Banks opening hours : Monday – Thursday : 08:00 – 14:00, Friday: 08:00-13.30.
The average cost for covering diet needs in Corfu amounts to GRD 80.000 approx. per month.
The ERASMUS students have the possibility to have two full meals per day in restaurants contracted with the Ionian University by paying the reduced price of 900 GRD (for both meals) directly to the Restaurant.
ERASMUS students can get further information on the contracted restaurants from the Accommodation Office.
Cost of basic goods
350 gr. of bread = GRD 250
1 lt of milk = 500 GRD
1 yogurt = 350 GRD
Coca-Cola (1 tin) = 250 GRD
1 telephone card (100 units) = 1.000 GRD
Stamps (per letters weight) = 200 – 500 GRD

Transportation means

There are 9 lines of buses, which serve the town and the outskirts. Most of the terminals are located at the Sanrocco Square.

There are, also, coaches which serve the small and big villages of the island and at the same time they connect the island with the continental Greece (via Igoumenitsa). The terminal is located at the I.Theotoki str.( formerly Avramiou str.).
