Archives and Library Sciences Dept.
The aim of the Department of Archives and Library Sciences is to train staff to work in the Municipal Archives, in Libraries, record offices, information services and in general with those bodies responsible for administering the country’s cultural herita ge.
The student can choose one of the two specializations Archives or Library Sciences. The Department will shortly be introducing a Museum Studies course for the training of Museum administrators and curators. Courses at the Department have equivalent status to those on offer at foreign universities and students may transfer onto an advanced level in the History Department. In order to better prepare them for work, and depending on their choice of specialization, students are instructed in the workings of th e institutions of the Modern Greek and European History. They also receive a thorough grounding in Literature, History and Psychology, the main aim being to provide them with the essential tools for their work.
Special optional subjects allow the students to gain some knowledge of more specific specialist areas. Graduates of the Department can expect to find employment in the Municipal Archives (Records Offices),municipal archive services and in Greek libraries. Students will also have the opportunity to post-graduate studies with a view to engaging in scientific research or taking up a career in teaching .
