The Department of History operates in Corfu. Every year there are about 100 new students enrolled, while the teaching staff numbers about 22 tenured and non-tenured persons. The Department provides undergraduate studies as well as post-graduate degrees. It is governed by the Head of the Department elected, with his Deputy, for a period of two years. The supreme governing body of the Department is the General Assembly, in which all the tenured faculty as well as representatives of the students participate. The current Head of the Department, elected for the period 1998-2000, is Professor Dimitrios Sofianos and his deputy is Assoc. Prof. Nikos Karapidakis.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR 1998-99

The academic year is structured into two semesters of 13 weeks of classes each. For each semester there will be a three-week examination period. During the month of September, there will be a supplemental examination period.

Winter semester: 14 October 1999 to 5 February 2000

Christmas holidays: 21 December 1999 to 7 January 2000

Examination period: 7-25 February 2000

Spring semester: 28 February to 28 May 2000

Easter holidays: 24 April to 6 May 2000

Examination period: 5 to 23 June 2000

Supplemental examination period: September 2000
